The aviation industry is on the brink of a significant transformation with the introduction of remotely piloted aircraft systems (RPAS). To support our work to ensure these innovative aircraft integrate safely and smoothly into our skies, we have published Annex 6, Part IV. This groundbreaking annex provides comprehensive standards and recommended practices (SARPs) for the international operation of RPAS, marking a significant milestone in aviation safety and efficiency.
What is Annex 6, Part IV?
Annex 6, Part IV, primarily serves Member States, civil aviation authorities (CAAs), air navigation service providers (ANSPs), and aircraft operators. It establishes the framework for international RPAS operations, detailing the requirements for obtaining an RPAS operator certificate (ROC). Developed by the RPAS Panel on behalf of the Air Navigation Commission and adopted by the ICAO Council, this Annex became effective in July 2024 and will become applicable from 26 November 2026.
This first edition of Annex 6, Part IV, sets the stage for safe and standardized international RPAS operations, with additional standards to be developed as the industry evolves.
Why do these standards matter?
