In a world where air travel connects millions and connectivity drives progress, ICAO serves a critical role in ensuring that the skies remain safe, efficient, and sustainable. But how did our organization take on these responsibilities, and how are we shaping the future of aviation? What a story we have to tell.

In our new video series, ICAO Explained, we have embarked on a journey to explain who we are—our origins, mission, and the critical work we undertake. In this first episode, “Uniting the Skies,” we are exploring the history of ICAO, beginning with that first meeting that took place in Chicago in the wake of World War II.

It has been eighty years since visionary leaders from 54 nations came together with a shared goal to use civil aviation as a means of fostering peace and cooperation. The Chicago Convention laid the groundwork for international collaboration, emphasizing safety and efficiency in air travel. But this isn’t just a history lesson.

There have been challenges and triumphs that have shaped ICAO’s mission and the work that has supported aviation’s growth globally. We’re sharing insight into how ICAO’s structure promotes inclusivity and consensus among our 193 Member States, ensuring that every nation has a voice in shaping aviation standards.

As we explore the development of Standards and Recommended Practices (SARPs), you’ll learn how these critical guidelines form the backbone of global aviation, ensuring safety and sustainability across the industry. The collaborative efforts that go into creating these standards—drawing on input from governments, industry experts, and academia—underscores the importance of unity in addressing the evolving challenges in aviation.

Our global impact and our commitment to supporting Member States has helped them advance their aviation capabilities. These are short videos with big explanations on how ICAO helps countries prioritize aviation as a catalyst for sustainable development, ensuring that air travel remains accessible and beneficial for all. We have had a pretty remarkable journey.  For eight decades we have adapted to meet new challenges and we have worked alongside Member States to foster a safer, more sustainable aviation environment. Curious about how these efforts translate into real-world benefits? Join us in “Uniting the Skies” to discover how ICAO’s mission influences air travel for millions around the globe and what the future holds for aviation.
