As the aviation network continues to expand and evolve, the workforce also has to grow to meet greater demands. From pilots and engineers to AI specialists and sustainability experts, the industry needs a new generation of professionals who are ready to lead with the skills and innovation required. But how do we attract and prepare this next generation? That is the focus of this latest episode in the ICAO Explained video series.

The Next Generation of Aviation Professionals (NGAP) episode explores how at ICAO we work with our 193 Member States and industry partners to ensure that tomorrow’s aviation workforce is not only large enough—but also diverse, forward-looking, and fully equipped to meet the challenges of a rapidly changing sector.

This episode highlights ICAO’s efforts to attract, train, and retain talent in every aviation discipline, including those emerging from new technologies like artificial intelligence, advanced air mobility, and green energy. It also explores how ICAO promotes gender equality and provides pathways into aviation careers through mentorships, internships, and career development opportunities.

Central to this mission is the NGAP Programme, which fosters global collaboration and dialogue among young professionals. Initiatives like the Model ICAO Forum give students a chance to simulate ICAO diplomatic and technical discussions, build leadership skills, and deepen their understanding of international civil aviation.

We’re sharing the episode ahead of the NGAP Global Summit, which is taking place from 12 to 14 August 2025 at the ICC Durban in South Africa. Co-hosted by ICAO and the South African Civil Aviation Authority under the leadership of the Department of Transport, the Summit will bring together young professionals, educators, regulators, and industry leaders to shape a resilient and inclusive future for aviation talent. Under the theme “The Flight Plan for Future Aviation Talent: Innovate, Educate, Inspire – Building the Workforce for the Skies Ahead,” the event will spotlight key issues such as digital transformation, gender equality, and aviation career development.
