The APAC Webinar on enhanced wake turbulence separation

By APAC Office - ICAO on July 24, 2023

On 27th June, the ICAO APAC Regional Sub-Office hosted an informative webinar to share valuable experiences and lessons learned in implementing reduced wake turbulence separation minima, which have been in effect since 5th November 2020. The event introduced participants to ICAO’s ongoing efforts in developing regulations and procedures while shedding light on the operational benefits and challenges of these changes and featured presentations from ICAO HQ, China, Hong Kong China, Japan, ROK, and IFATCA.

A significant focus was placed on evaluating the advantages of enhanced wake turbulence groups and categories. Key topics covered during the webinar included the rule-making process for implementing WTG, criteria for selecting trial airports, necessary modifications to existing airports, ensuring compliance, conducting safety assessments, post-implementation evaluation, controller training, and fostering stakeholder engagement.

The webinar underscored the importance of cooperation and education among pilots, highlighting the critical role they play in this enhanced system. Additionally, it emphasized the value of WTG memory cards for controllers, offering practical support and tools in their daily operations.

This groundbreaking webinar represents a collective effort to enhance air travel safety and efficiency in the Asia Pacific Region. By embracing reduced wake turbulence separation measures and staying informed on best practices, aviation stakeholders are working together to create a smoother and more secure flying experience for all.

More information on this webinar can be found here. ICAO produces these documents that provide reference to this topic: Doc 4444 Air Traffic Management and Doc 8643 Aircraft Type Designators. The Manual on the Implementation of Wake Turbulence Separation Minima (Doc 10122) will be available next year.
