Global efforts to limit and reduce the impact of aviation on the climate

Enhancing Regional Capacity and Participation through CORSIA Buddy Partnerships
By APAC Office - ICAO on July 23, 2021

As part of the global effort to reduce and eliminate CO2 emissions, ICAO introduced the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA) to address the matter while setting a long-term aspirational goal to achieve carbon-neutral growth from 2020. For this reason, CORSIA Buddy Partnerships are an important part of ICAO CORSIA Assistance, Capacity Building and Training (ACT-CORSIA) which helps prepare States for CORSIA implementation.

Through the CORSIA Buddy Partnerships, technical experts provided by supporting States work together with the CORSIA Focal Points of requesting States to offer dedicated training and closely follow-up on the preparation and implementation of the CORSIA monitoring, reporting and verification (MRV) system.

Globally, 16 CORSIA Buddy Partnership supporting States have assisted 118 requesting States. In the Asia Pacific (APAC) region, Australia, Japan, New Zealand, the Republic of Korea, and Singapore have supported 27 requesting States with the implementation of CORSIA MRV requirements. In 2021, the 3rd phase of CORSIA Buddy Partnerships focused on implementing the reporting and verification requirements of CORSIA (Annex 16, Volume IV), emphasizing the use of the CORSIA Central Registry (CCR).

States interested in requesting or providing assistance through the CORSIA Buddy Partnerships are invited to contact ICAO by sending an email here.
