ICAO’s 15th TRIP Symposium: Bridging the physical digital document divide

Driven by predicted increases in traveller volumes and ongoing security risks, the aviation industry, border control authorities, and travel document issuing agencies are looking for more efficient and secure ways to identify and process travellers, while harnessing the capabilities and opportunities afforded by emerging or evolving technologies.

To assist with these efforts, the ICAO TRIP Symposium and Exhibition on ICAO Traveller Identification Programme (TRIP) was held from 25 to 28 June 2019 at ICAO Headquarters in Montréal, Canada. The annual gathering provides opportunities for representatives from public and private sectors to coordinate efforts in advancing the five elements of the ICAO Traveller Identification Programme (TRIP) Strategy. The key focus of the ICAO TRIP Strategy involves the recognized need for a holistic and integrated approach to traveller identification management.

The 2019 Symposium emphasized the need for incorporating technology with the interdependent elements of ICAO’s TRIP Strategy and maximizing the benefits of using digital representation to mitigate challenges for future travellers. Accordingly, the theme of this year’s Symposium highlighted ways to Bridge the Physical-Digital Document Divide.

ICAO recognizes the crucial benefits traveller identification management brings to aviation security and travel facilitation. ICAO’s mission is to contribute to the capacity of Member States, under the “No Country Left Behind” objective, to uniquely identify individuals by providing tools and knowledge to establish and confirm the identity of travellers.

The exhibition that complemented the Symposium showcasing a broad range of products and services related to travel document security applications, border inspection and automated border control systems, and identity management. We shared all of the presentations that took place during the TRIP Symposium on SkyLive, you can watch all of the recordings on our UnitingAviation.com platform here.

Two of the sessions of the Symposium moved from traditional speech-style presentations to a new interactive format that allowed for the presenters and participants to engage over the topics of the sessions shaping the outcomes of these discussions.
Topics included the benefits of capturing a passenger’s biographic data and other flight details in a single step prior to departure and the transmission of the information by electronic means to the Border Control Agencies for advanced risk assessment. Presenters shared their experiences in implementing API in their States. They also addressed worldwide threat activities related to advance passenger information (API) and API training methodologies that could assist participants in determining their training needs.
