Delivering a Master of Science in Aviation Security for aviation professionals

Registrations have opened for the joint ICAO and Buckinghamshire New University’s new Master of Science (MSc) degree programme in Aviation Security. Participation in the delivery of this MSc programme, represents an important milestone for ICAO, since it is the first aviation security Masters-level partnership with an academic institution.

This programme is designed and delivered by academics and practitioners from the aviation, security and resilience sectors. It offers participants a unique opportunity to learn both theoretical and applied perspectives and to apply a range of specialist skills to the organisations in which they, as specialists, may operate. Based on best practices and regulatory guidance, the Programme is designed to meet the needs of the aviation industry for qualified and knowledgeable aviation security professionals.

The MSc programme provides students with an academically rigorous and work-related programme. Drawing on best practice and regulatory guidance from aviation business leaders, the programme will challenge and stimulate innovative thought and new approaches to aviation security management.

The two-year part-time study programme is delivered in a virtual classroom, providing students with the flexibility to learn from home while working. Structured in three stages, it allows participants to gain accreditation from Buckinghamshire New University at a Postgraduate Certificate level and a Postgraduate Diploma level, as well as exit at these points if they wish. The full programme will culminate in participants completing a research dissertation or project-based around the issues concerning aviation security.

The development of aviation security knowledge through this collaboration between academia and industry regulator is unique.  Importantly, it will offer the opportunity to its students and graduates to equip themselves to think about and manage current and future challenges for the sector as the risk environment continues to grow and change.”

The new partnership is the outcome of an agreement between ICAO and the University that provides for ICAO’s recognition of the University as a Corporate Partner within the TRAINAIR PLUS Programme and sets forth how the two organizations will cooperate to develop and implement aviation security training programmes.
