Discussions with the President of Azerbaijan; addressing global aviation priorities at COP29

Every year, stakeholders from around the world gather for an important event: the United Nations Climate Change Conference, known as COP. This gathering serves as the foremost multilateral decision-making forum on climate change, bringing together nearly every country to address one of the most pressing issues of our time. The event, which took place in Baku, Azerbaijan, from 11 to 22 November 2024, was the 29th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

Established in 1992, the UNFCCC is a landmark international treaty aimed at combating climate change and its impacts. World leaders, UN agencies, negotiators, business representatives, activists, climate scientists, Indigenous Peoples, and many other parties, came together to share insights and strategies for effective climate action. The conference addressed critical goals, including limiting the global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius, enhancing support for vulnerable communities, and achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, all while ensuring that national climate plans are both ambitious and implementable.

ICAO’s Council President Salvatore Sciacchitano met with the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan H.E. Mr. Kassym-Jomart Tokayev in Baku, Azerbaijan, on 12 November 2024, during which they discussed the critical challenges confronting global aviation in the context of climate change.

The discussions were a highlight of his mission to the 2024 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP29) in Baku, where he addressed the COP29 World Leaders Climate Action Summit High-level Roundtable on Energy: Advancing Climate Mitigation Action.The President’s full statement is shared below.

High-level discussions on these themes were also held with key officials, including the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Secretary-General Mr. Arsenio Dominguez, IRENA Director-General Mr. Francesco La Camera, UNFCCC Deputy Executive Secretary Ms. Noura Hamladji, World Bank Head of Delegation for MIGA Mr. Hiroshi Matano, and International Monetary Fund Deputy Director of Fiscal Affairs Mr. Ruud De Mooij.These strategic meetings targeted priorities such as the unification of approaches to international transport emissions, issues related to Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA), and investment in clean energy projects for aviation.
